Just wanted to find out what you're doing with donations for 5 for Fairness? Are you supporting any particular charities or nonprofits? I am working on the possibility of funding a nonprofit that provides radio serials for women and men in countries where women are mistreated. The latest idea is to provide a radio serial for men and boys in the eastern Congo where rape is rampant. Please let me know if you have targeted a nonprofit. Thanks.
Hi Judy:
Thanks for asking. Right now we are still collecting donations. We have $3,474.28 so far. When we get to $5000, we, as a group, will need to figure out where to send our first grant. Anyone who is a member can propose a project for funding. If you want to propose the non-profit you describe, that would be great. When we get to $5000 in our grant account, I will send out an email asking people to propose projects and then, after we have had some time to ask our questions about them, we'll vote on where to send the money. The idea is that in the process, we all will learn about great work being done to make the world more fair for girls, be able to think through for ourselves what organization we think most deserves our grant and hopefully bring others to the cause. That way, even if, say the organization I propose doesn't get the grant, lots of people will have learned about it in the process and nothing stops anyone here from donating on their own to whatever causes really spark their passion.
5 for Fairness is truly an experiment in social and democratic change-making. Though I had the idea in the beginning, I hope and fully expect it to change depending on the needs, wishes and good ideas of the group members. As long as we engage increasing numbers of people in the movement for fairness, and support and sustain the great work being done in this effort around the world, I will be a happy camper.
