5 for Fairness

if you want to catch a lot of rain, put out a lot of teacups...

Hi,
My name is Emma C. and I am a senior in high school in Santa Monica, California. A family friend put me in touch with Anna and i did some research and decided to join the cause. I recently went to see Gloria Steinem speak and since have been really motivated to do something more. A lot of people were questioning whether my generation is involved enough in keeping women's causes moving forwards instead of at a standstill. This really resonated with me and I decided I could be doing more for the cause. I am officially in charge of the 5 for Fairness Social Media Outreach Coordinator and am responsible for updating our Twitter and Facebook. If you have any content you would like me to post or just want to talk, please send me a message! I have been involved with numerous organizations, most recently Be An Angel Save A Life, which registers people over the age of 18 for the National Bone Marrow Registry. My goal is to expand the 5fer community as much as possible before I leave for college, as well as keep our loyal 5fers up to date on what's happening with the organization. Look forward to talking to everyone!

Hi Emma,

One of the organizations I work for here in Seattle is the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute. Every day I encounter the reports of patients whose lives have been saved through an unrelated donor. Often family members aren't a match and people have to go to the World Book of donors. Once someone gets to a point where they choose to have a stem cell transplant, it's almost always their only hope of cure - it doesn't always go without complications, but when it works, it provides a door to a normal lifespan. It never ceases to amaze me when I read a patient's cells are "100% donor", meaning the bone marrow took. So THANK YOU for helping to get more people to donate - it is SO important to that person who needs their marrow.
Christine,

glad to hear that there are so many success stories! I just had another Bone Marrow registry drive at my temple on Sunday and am hosting one this Thursday at my school. The more people we get the better and I plan on continuing to work for this cause!

Wow - you go, Emma!! As transplants become easier to tolerate, more people will be able to have them - already they're being used for sickle cell anemia and MS. Our center is adding 60 more Oncology beds in the near future, I imagine mostly for more transplant patients. So more donors will be needed in the future. Thanks so much for all you're doing!

Christine
