Global Girl Media

At a time when the internet and new digital technologies are opening a world of possibilities for education, communication and activism on a global scale, the fact remains that these unprecedented, new opportunities to create and share content are still only available to those with the financial and educational resources necessary to participate. Global Girl Media seeks to address this disparity by supplying the equipment, education and support necessary to help young women create content that authentically reflects their lives and communities.

Together with our Spokesperson and Mentor JULIE FOUDY, ESPN Sportscaster, two-time gold-medalist and former Captain of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team, Global Girl Media‘s pilot project will be KICK IT UP!, which invites high-school-age girls in South Africa to become participant digital video journalists for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The project links under-served girls with seasoned broadcasters and journalists, providing training and hands-on experience in story development and composition, HD digital video camera and sound technologies, editing, and on-air media training at Global Girl Academies based in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and possibly Pretoria and Durban. These unique Global Girl workshops are designed to impart the technical, critical thinking and leadership skills necessary for participants to become outstanding Global Girl journalists. Global Girl Academies will be aligned with a major South African University or film/media school. All successful graduates will receive a special certificate of completion from Global Girl Academy.
Through the establishment of Global Girl News Bureaus in participating South African towns, qualified graduates of Global Girl Academy will become Global Girl reporters, who will develop and produce video and print content for distribution via broadcast, cell phone, internet, and digital technology during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Their work will garner international exposure while at the same time building self-confidence, leadership skills, support and strategic alliances for ongoing training, sports enthusiasm and job development.

Global Girl Media does more than give girls the skills they need to create original media: We make sure it’s seen. Our cutting-edge interactive website will be a place where girls can upload their videos and watch videos submitted by girls all around the world. GGM also distributes to broadcast and web-based news and other media outlets, creating content for a range of trans-media platforms such as on-line, mobile, social networking sites and electronic billboards in order to reach the broadest audience possible.

Just $2500 will sponsor a girl in our program so we would use the grant money to fund the cost of two girls completing our workshop.
