The Maasai Girls Education Fund (MGEF) strives to improve the literacy, health, and economic wellbeing of Maasai women in Kenya and their families through education of girls and their communities. We believe that a woman needs two things to rise out of poverty: self-esteem and self-reliance.  Education gives her both.See More

Hi:
I'm Diana, a 5fer intern, and am just dropping by to say "Thank you!" for being such a loyal and active 5fer.  It is because of members like you that we have been able to give away seven (yes, seven!) $5000 grants to organizations working to make the world fair for girls and women - and we're only a few hundred dollars away from our eighth!  We are so appreciative of the way you have put up with all our many growing pains and hope you keep on believing in our circle and the good we can do.  Thanks again…

Hi Amanda:
I hope you are proud of what you achieved here in this grant cycle!  It is tough to go up against an incumbent with the kind of built in support that Camp VOICE had and I think you did well.  I know it is disappointing not to win but I think Camp VOICE has shown us that the group has a sense of loyalty toward organizations that show up and try hard over multiple cycles.

Our next grant cycle will probably be in late May/early June (depends on when we get to $5000!) and I do hope you and MGEF will stick around for it. I PROMISE I will set you up with an intern early and that my top priority will be getting that Team Leader Toolkit published.  If you want to talk things over, feel free to give me a call on Skype at fiveforfairness or at 310-454-4230.

In the meantime, you might want to make sure your supporters stay subscribed to our newsletter - they can update their delivery preferences so they just get emails when it is time to vote - so you can count on them showing up for you again next time. More soon and GREAT JOB!  Anna

Hi Amanda:
Yes, voting starts tomorrow.  A couple of housekeeping items for you, as Team leader:

1. Voting (fingers crossed) will start at 6PM PST and end on 4/23 at 6PM PST.

2. Gift memberships are much easier to give now. These are a great way to build up your Team LIKEs as well as votes. Here's the process:

a)People indicate how many gift memberships they would like to give via our gorgeous (if we do say so ourselves) new Donation page.

b)once they donate, they will be taken to a form to fill out the names and emails of their giftees

c)the giftees will receive an email with a link to a form where they can collect their gift memberships.

d)we add their emails to the voter database

e)giftees get an email with a link to the ballot.

With the exception of us adding their emails to the voter database, the process is entirely automated so it should be much, much easier this time around.

3. Anyone who has ever donated - or received a gift membership - is eligible to vote but not everyone stays on our Mail Chimp mailing list so if you know who joined last time, send them an email with a link to the ballot after voting begins.

4. Keep posting and answering questions because I will send out three newsletters to those who have not voted during the week!

Got any questions? Fire away by leaving a comment on my page.

Good luck!

Hi there:

We should be ready to start our grant cycle on Monday, April 2! We'll have two weeks of storytelling, begin voting week on April 16, end voting on April 23 and announce the winner on April 24.  It should be exciting and I do hope you are up for another round.

Also, would you like an intern to help you during the grant cycle?  They can help spread the word, rally the troops, hunt for new votes and otherwise make your life easier. Lemme know!

We have a new Donate, Join & Gift Membership page which I hope will make donating and giving gift memberships much simpler.  Would love to know your thoughts on the way it is laid out.

Please let me know if you are up for Round 2! More soon!

Hey Amanda:
We are trying, with each grant cycle, to make things simpler for new members here on 5 for Fairness, but we still have work to do!  It might be a good idea to check with your members who joined us here on the community site to make sure they donated and voted (and actually check with everyone you sent to us!).  If they are not sure, they probably haven't!

If they donated at Paypal, they will have received a receipt from Paypal via email. If they didn't, they probably didn't donate.

If they donate, we add them to our donor database and they get two emails from us: one is a welcome, the other a tax receipt.  Once they vote, they get an email thanking them for voting.  If they don't have any of these, they probably haven't donated or voted.

BUT sometimes emails go awry, so you can always email me or leave a comment on my page with their email addresses and I can check to see if they are in our voter database.

If you find they haven't donated or voted yet, here are really simple (I hope, tell me if they are not) directions that you can give them.

We are, as I suspect you guys are, a work in progress and our best hope is to use the mistakes of each grant round to make the next one a more fun, easy and meaningful experience for all our 5fers. Thanks for your patience and hard work.

Hi Amanda:

We're getting ready to vote and I just wanted to drop by and say I think you have done an amazing job as Team leader so far. I am sure, no matter what happens with the voting, that MGEF has found new supporters and fans over the last two weeks.  I know you've found one in me!
You might want to let your supporters know about our new Gift Membership option which is an easy way for people to donate for friends and family (or anyone who can't deal with Paypal).  The process is simple and outlined right here:
A note of caution though: Gift memberships have to be processed by hand, and it can take more time for people to come and collect their gift, so though we'll try our best to process any Gift memberships we get on the last day of voting in time for people to vote, we can NOT guarantee any Gift memberships will be completely processed after 6PM PST on Tuesday 2/21. So tell people to get them in early!
If you have any questions about how voting week works, please let me know. Meanwhile, we'll be touting your Team on Twitter and here on 5 for Fairness!
Good luck and thanks for the great work you are doing to make the world a fair place for girls!

Hi Amanda:
We are getting close to the voting round and we need either MGEF's IRS letter of determination showing that you are a 501(c)3 or your fiscal sponsor's letter.  You can either email it to me at anna@5forFairness.org or better yet, post a discussion with the information so all our 5fers can see it.  Thanks!  Anna
