Anna McDonnell said… Hi Gordie:
Well we did it and Molly's grant was BY FAR the most successful grant in the short but not insubstantial history of 5 for Fairness. She took us to the next level! I wanted to share what one of our new members wrote when she joined us here in the 5 for Fairness community today:
"I learned of the organization through Breaking Ground, but I was also moved by the story about Molly Primrose Nye. What a remarkable, inspiring young woman. If your organization is supporting people like her & organizations like Breaking Ground, I want to help too."
I can't think of a better way to end the grant cycle. Thank you again so much for your generous donation that got us going. I think you'll be happy to know, too, that we raised $7500 in this grant cycle and so have one in our next grant in our pocket and are halfway to the one after that!
Thanks again, Gordie!

Anna McDonnell said… Well, I'm certainly glad I am up to snuff in the friendship department! I get the concern about the competition too but, as you say, the sportswomanship is a great model for a diffferent kind of competition and participating gets them in front of literally hundreds of people who are interested in the issue. It's like a giant focus group to help them figure out how best to tell their stories and build support for their work.

I just noticed that your story about Molly has been viewed 130 times so far. Makes me so happy to think that people are learning about your amazing girl and her deeply loving family.

Claire Charamnac said… Hi Nye Family,
I’m the co-founder of Women LEAD, one of the teams competing for the grant this month. I’d love your support to empower more than 200 young women in Nepal to become leaders in their schools and communities! Your vote would help us build the capacity of future female leaders to tackle the root causes of poverty and discrimination. Our organization strongly believes that building young women's confidence and skills is key to empowerment. Please check out our page and website to see the work that we do and let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Hello Gordie, Kathleen, Molly, Lulu and Poppy!
So glad you are on 5for F with us. It is a wonderful way to give to women and girls.
We miss you in LA!

We have a number of incredible organizations championed here, including Camp Voice, Man Up, Equality Now, and Solar Sister. In addition to supporting these teams, we have a lot else going on here. We have discussions, videos, and articles posted by our members all the time addressing womens issues and rights worldwide, and I hope that you will not hesitate in joining in the forum, as well as contributing your own posts, etc should you be so inspired. If you have any questions at all about the site, please do not hesitate to ask me! thanks so much!

Anna McDonnell said… Hi Gordie:
I can't change your member name for you but you can - in about three seconds. Just click the Setttings link in the upper right hand corner of the page and on the next page, where it says Full Name and currently reads Gordie Nye, just put in the Nye Family. I am thrilled at the idea of our next grant being in Molly's name. If you will send me a picture to put up and a paragraph or two about your sweet and stalwart girl, I will put them up when we get ready to start the next grant cycle. My mother lives 45 minutes from Princeton and would kill us if we didn't stay with her but lets definitely have a meal over the Chase weekend! Thanks again! Anna
Anna McDonnell said… Gordie, welcome to the 5 for Fairness circle and THANK YOU! My gosh, what an amazing and welcome surprise your donation was today. We just gave away our 5th $5000 grant - the winner was Solar Sister. Because the competition was so fierce between Solar Sister and the second place finisher, Camp VOICE (only 4 votes separated them), we had lots of new members join and were already well on our way to our next grant. Your donation puts us over the top and we are so grateful!
In the past, the largest single donor to a grant cycle has had the chance, if they want to take it, of naming the grant in honor of someone they love. One grant was in honor of my sister Mima, who died too young, when she was 19, and another was in honor of Mary Norton Shands, the mother of one of our members. If you would like to name our next grant in honor of someone, we will put his or her picture on the home page along with a paragraph or two telling us about him or her. When the grant was in Mima's name, we also had a place where people who knew her who came and joined in her honor shared memories of her. It was very moving for me to know that, thirty years after her death, she is still alive in the hearts and minds of so many people.
The last grant cycle was so successful that we have realized we need a new, completely automated system for adding new donors into our voter database. It is going to take Paolo, our resident volunteer genius, a month or so to build the new system so we won't start the next grant cycle until after the 1st of the year. So if you want to take a bit of time to think about naming the grant, please do.
In the meantime, thank you again. I hope you and all your girls have a wonderful holiday season and that we get the chance to see you and thank you in person.
