More Bad News from The Democratic Republic of Congo

I don't know why they call it Democratic or a Republic, but the news from the DRC and Panzi Hospital is horrendous on the subject of rape. I am so proud that we sent our first grant to Panzi to help the victims, but I wish there was something more that we could do to end this horrible crime against women, which now seems to have gone from a war crime to standard operating procedure. Here is the latest report from Oxfam. But, by the way, getting a study like this out is… Continue

ANOTHER WORTHY MEDICAL MISSION TO AFRICA: MEDICINE FOR HUMANITY

Judy Ranan and I just met with Dr. Leo Lagasse, another amazing doctor, doing women's health work in Africa -- this time Uganda. He is partnered with UCLA and takes interns, residents and nurses down to Uganda to help service the women in that country, who have little to no medical care. These doctors are training local doctors with high-def computers which are hooked up to the UCLA operating rooms so that the Uganda doctors can see exactly how to perform the latest in pelvic, obstetric and… Continue

Women LEAD

We empower young women to take leadership positions alongside men in Nepal by providing them with the skills to pursue their vision for change.Women in Nepal face overwhelming challenges: 1/3 of girls aged 15 to 19 are married and 60% of women are illiterate. Young women have the passion and vision to solve these problems, but simply lack the necessary resources. We build the capacity of future female leaders to tackle root causes of poverty and discrimination. We have equipped 200 promising…See More

How Awesome Women Are

Was listening to NPR this morning, maybe you heard this too, about one woman who ran a marathon, pregnant, and then a few hours later gave birth to her baby.  Also, another pregnant woman, whose water broke, but she had made an appointment for a driving test for her license, and it had taken so long to get that appointment, that she didn't want to give it up.  She took the test while in labor, passed it, and then used her new license to drive herself to the hospital and give birth!See More

Legal Aspect of this Group

Thumbnail
Besides having Gloria Steinem (also one of my all-time heroes!!) attached to it, I love the idea that this group can have substantial and long-lasting effects for girls and women by actually changing laws.  It seems like a lot of organizations have more of a band-aid approach to a problem where this one has a more long-term vision.

Hi Mary!

I just sent you a friend request (though I mistakenly wrote 'Madi' instead of 'Mary' - whoops!) Thanks so much for supporting Orchid Project -- we appreciate it very much! If you're able to get just one more person to support us, that would be amazing. Every little bit helps!

Thanks,

Emily

Hi,

My name is Payton M, I am a 5 For Fairness intern. I’m stopping by to let you know that now is the time to support your favorite team or teams to help them advance into the voting round. Seven teams are competing for five available spots in the voting round. The five teams that make it to the voting round will have a chance to win our $5000 grant, but only one team will win. The teams need your support now to make it into the voting round.  Here's how to support a Team:

First click on the Teams tab at the top of any page to see all of the teams. Click on any team that sounds interesting to you. If you like what you see and want to become a supporter, click the +Support (Team name) button in the upper right hand corner of the Team page. You can support as many Teams as you think deserve a spot in the Voting Round. Click here for more information on how to support a Team or, if you are ready to start, click here to see all the Teams.

Thanks for supporting 5 For Fairness,

Payton M.
