4 Months as a Voice 4 Girls Intern

I've been living in India for almost 4 months now while I'm studying abroad at the University of Hyderabad and working for Voice 4 Girls as an intern. India and Voice 4 Girls has changed my life forever. Having the opportunity to work with girls on their confidence and strength as young women is the most inspiring thing I've ever experienced. I've been working so hard with Voice over the past few months and I'm looking forward to being a Voice for girls in India through Voice when I return…

Kym Worthy’s Mission: Solve 11,000 Rapes

just read a fascinating article from the Daily Beast...

"[Worthy] is on a singular mission: seeking justice for people who do report their rapes. She’s leading a charge to get more than 11,000 police rape kits—which contain swabs of semen, saliva, and other evidence—tested for DNA in her city, and to establish a road map for other U.S. cities to do the same. In Detroit the kits had piled up, ignored for years, in a police storage facility, until one of Worthy’s colleagues discovered…

Lifting Our Vioces: Ending Child Marriage in Malawi Discussion

What happens to the 46.9% girls who are married before the age of 18 in Malawi?

If you haven't seen this video it is quite informative as well as being moving. Imagine being a girl of fifteen forced to marry a man who is at least six years older than you. You get pregnant and have to drop out of school because your husband wants you home. You get no education and are 5% more likely to die in childbirth than if you had been older. Your child is born and you see it is a girl. Your…

Being an intern.

Hi I am Diana L. a 5 for Fairness intern. I heard about 5FF through my mother who is a grantee winner. This organization called to me because it promotes gender equality. One thing I enjoy is being able to see all the different organizations and what they do it is inspiring to see all these different non-profits. I am really glad to be an 5FF intern.

My 14-Year-Old Writing Instructor

It took at least an hour for Guadalupe to look at me.  I focused on the iridescent green shadow on her lids while her espresso colored eyes held down the floor.

We were both participating in a fiction/non-fiction workshop, given by the non-profit organization WriteGirl

Founded by songwriter, vocalist and poet Keren Taylor in 2001, WriteGirl promotes confidence and self-expression through creative writing to empower teen girls…

Final Friday Fairness of 2010: Women for Women International

When we watch the news at night, we see updates on the victims of the latest earthquake or tsunami, war or hurricane. But what happens to these people after these crises? What happens when the TV camera crews turn away and the celebrities return home? The "Women for Women International" organization is working to stabilize the life of war survivors, and turn the hardships in their lives into situations from which they…

Room to Read's Girls' Education Program

Room to Read's Girls' Education Program was based on one single idea: "When you educate a girl, you educate the next generation." Founded in 2000, this branch of Room to Read attempts to increase literacy and desire to learn through both tangible and intangible methods. This organization provides certain materials, such as school supplies, textbooks, and transportation, to girls who otherwise would not be able to afford or access these items. It also assists these students by implementing "a… Continue

Monday MOSTE Post

As I arrived at Anna's home last Sunday afternoon, I could feel it in the air. "It" was the ambiance of good cheer, good deeds, and great girls. I walked into the house and was immediately greeted with smiles and laughter coming from every side of the room.

The representatives from MOSTE, including President of the Board Alejandra Valenzuela, spoke passionately about the organization, and lovingly about their girls. They took the time to listen to the stories about how we…

Friday Fairness: The Alliance for Clean Cookstoves

Last month at the Clinton Global Initiative, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton introduced "The Alliance for Clean Cookstoves", a new philanthropic program. The goal of this Alliance, as is guessed at from the title, is to bring cleaner cooking stoves to locations all over the globe.

The Alliance for Clean Cookstoves has a specific demographic in mind to receive their aid, as it knows the harmful consequences of hazardous cooking conditions. This program "primarily targets…

Bell Bajao, centered in India, has already reached over 124 million people, spreading awareness of domestic violence and human rights through innovative media campaigns. The Afghanistan Midwifery Project

When I travel, I always pick up the magazine Glamour to read. In the August issue of Glamour, I read an article entitled:"I Saved Her Life With My Two Hands". Intrigued, I flipped the page and began to read. It tells the story of a soldier named Michelle Johnson who was… Continue

Friday Fairness: PROJECT GIRL

In so many different situations, problems in our world could be fixed if everyone could express themselves and communicate with others while understanding the said and unsaid intonations. The organization "PROJECT GIRL" attempts to make these underlying meanings in the media's messages easier for girls around the world to understand through an art-based curriculum.

PROJECT GIRL began with the goal of helping clarify the jumble of words and advertisements that are attached…

Friday Fairness: The National Girls Collaborative Project

This summer, I attended a course at UCLA that focused on the interdisciplinary world between art and science (The SciArt NanoLab Program). I am proud to say that for the first time, more females were in attendance of this class than males. All around the globe, different organizations are echoing this sentiment and supporting girls diving into the world of science. The National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) is one of these groups.

The goal of the NGCP is to aid…

Friday Fairness: Girls & Gangs

Almost everyone here knows about the gangs problems in Los Angeles. We hear the stories and shake our heads sadly, extremely upset that such tragedies can and do happen so close to home. So what can we do to help? The Association "Girls & Gangs" has something to say.

Girls & Gangs has one main aspiration: "to provide support and advocacy for girls and young women involved with the juvenile justice system by providing them with opportunities to envision and build…

The Akilah Institute

This is a really unique organization. It's the first two-year college for women in Rwanda and it just opened this year in February. Their first class has 50 students, many of whom had parents killed in the genocide of 1994. 1/3 of the students are the head of their households and "86% of them have held leadership positions". It was started by Elizabeth Davis and Dave Hughes and "is an initiative of Project Akilah, a U.S.-based tax-exempt nonprofit organization, and a registered international… Continue
