In Southern Sudan there are proportionally fewer girls going to school than in any other country in the world. Girls often times feel pressured to leave school in order to begin work to provide for their families. Although there are a myriad of reasons why only less than one percent of girls in South Sudan have completed primary schools, the lack of sanitary pads have contributed to this astonishing fact. A month's supply of sanitary pads costs more than a day's work of wages for working women. Girls miss up to 50 days of school annually because of their inability to purchase affordable sanitary pads. The mission of Pads Sudan Initiative is "to support young women in Southern Sudan and Provide them with equitable opportunity to help them excel in school".
This organization coincides with the 5 for fairness objective by providing girls with
EQUAL opportunities. An education is the foundation for success in life, and the simple act of providing young girls with sanitary pads can help them stay in school so they can get the most out of their schooling.
