Room to Read's Girls' Education Program

Room to Read's Girls' Education Program was based on one single idea: "When you educate a girl, you educate the next generation." Founded in 2000, this branch of Room to Read attempts to increase literacy and desire to learn through both tangible and intangible methods. This organization provides certain materials, such as school supplies, textbooks, and transportation, to girls who otherwise would not be able to afford or access these items. It also assists these students by implementing "a range of supplementary activities (tutoring, life skills training, mentoring and medical check-ups) that contribute to the girls' educational success". This way, the students not only attain supplies needed for their current grade level, but also tools useful for the rest of their lives.

This program seeks out girls who are either at risk of dropping out of, or already are not attending, their schools. Most of these girls have been effected by either cultural or economic pressures that have made it increasingly difficult to attend school. The Girls' Education Program believes that by providing these girls with an education, it benefits both the individual and the community. Some of the amazing outcomes of education for girls include: "lower infant mortality rates, increased eventual wages, increased likelihood of educating the next generation, improved family health, success in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS and other preventable diseases, [and] improvement of general economic development".

Currently, the Girls' Education Program is aiding over 6,800 girls in eight nations: Zambia, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Laos, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. Each student's supplies and assistance methods are designed to her community and specific situation. This organization also works with those closest to the student, including her teachers, parents, and neighbors, in order to guarantee a "strong support system in place to enable her to thrive". One school uniform at a time, Room to Read's Girls' Education Program is promoting education and helping girls across the globe.
