The Afghanistan Midwifery Project

When I travel, I always pick up the magazine Glamour to read. In the August issue of Glamour, I read an article entitled:"I Saved Her Life With My Two Hands". Intrigued, I flipped the page and began to read. It tells the story of a soldier named Michelle Johnson who was serving in Afghanistan when she saved a 13 year old girl with, well, her own two hands. The girl had been in labor for three days, but the child inside her had died on the third day. Thus Johnson was commissioned to extract the baby from the girl, despite the fact that she had only basic first aid training. However by doing so, she saved the girl's life. Johnson was inspired by her experience to start the Afghanistan Midwifery Project(AMP). Their mission is to "ensure that in Afghanistan’s near future, every birth is safe, every woman has access to medical care, and every woman is treated with dignity and respect in times of medical need". The AMP is a non-profit organization that was founded to "provide medical supplies and training to women in Afghanistan". They also provide "midwife training, midwife medical kits, health education classes, and delivery of medical supplies to remote locations throughout Afghanistan". But they need more help. $10 can buy two hygiene kits, which includes soap as well as bandages while $50 can give medical supplies for two clinics. Imagine what $5000 can do for these women.
